Our cameras have Sony's CCD, Exmor and Pregius sensors.

Which manufacturer do you use for the UV tubes in transilluminators and gel documentation systems?

Accepted Answer

We use EU and Japanese manufacturers like Philips, Toshiba, Sankyo. These are long lasting and emit those wavelengths that they claim. Chinese transilluminators and gel docs use low-quality Chinese tubes that emit wavelength across the range and have a short usage life span.

Which is the suggested UV wavelength for EtBr stained gels in gel documentation systems?

Accepted Answer

For EtBr stained gels (and many other stains), 312nm is the optimum UV wavelength for sensitive, quantitative work.

For band-excision and general work, 365nm is suggested, which limits damage to the nucleic acids. But weak bands may not be observable in 365nm transillumination, so that's a disadvantage.

Are 302nm transilluminators and 312nm transilluminators the same?

Accepted Answer

Yes. 302nm transilluminators, basically emit the same wavelength range as that of 312nm transilluminators. Mid-range UV tubes emit a peak wavelength-range between 302-312nm which some manufacturers offer as 302nm transilluminator, others as 312nm.

Are zoom lenses necessary in gel documentation systems?

Accepted Answer

Unless you documents gels of vastly different sizes on regular basis, you do not really need a zoom lens.

Zooming helps to fill up the view area with the gel, and unless you are documenting a gel size of 10x10cm at one moment and 20x25cm soon after, having a zoom lens will add to cost but won't help you much.
 
And if you are doing different sized gels but not on a frequent basis, a manual zoom lens is suggested.

What wavelength options do you have for epi-illumination?

Accepted Answer

All our gel documentation systems have white epi-illumination systems based on LEDs as standard. A popular choice is blue epi-illumination for stains that excite under blue emission. We also offer UV epi-illumination in different wavelengths if you need to illuminate your gel (or samples) from above. We can also offer other epi-illumination in red, green, IR wavelengths.

What wavelength options do you have for trans-illumination?

Accepted Answer

All our gel documentation systems have standard 302-312nm transillumination. We can offer a dual wavelength combination of 312nm and 365nm wavelengths (for those who want to document as well as excise bands). White trans-illumination table based on LEDs is also a popular option. Please note we provide a proper white light transillumination table and not just a converter. This helps prolong the UV tubes and also is quite bright. Another popular choice is blue trans-illumination for stains that excite under blue emission. Again, this is a proper illuminator and not a converter. Other wavelengths like 254nm can also be provided for special applications. Even a triple range transilluminator with 254nm, 312nm and 365nm UV tubes.
